I note Helen's sad face. Or "WTF" face.

I think it's more like WTF. Poor kid tried so hard to be the right minion. Oh well she's got Nancy now.

Looks less "WTF", more "...I'm fucked..." to me.

More likely Iseul was struggling with her own feelings, and was trying to compensate by urging Sara to become happy (as she saw it) heterosexual.

I dunno. She's not blind or stupid so she should have been aware how much she was making Sara miserable with her constant pushing and setting up. Granted, sometimes parents have a blind spot for such things. There's also the fact that she basically threw Sara's sexual freedom at her when she tried to come out.

Ah, but she was doing it for Sara's own good! A little misery now is a small price to pay for Sara getting to enjoy a happy life as a wife and mother in the suburbs, with 2.4 kids and a semi-regular hookup with a redheaded real estate agent named Elizabeth. Or something.

Does this include an oblivious husband or is the obliviousness optional?

I notice that in this scene, Iseul isn't her usual "laying down the law" self she is with Sara. She seems hesitant, and Sara's the one being all, "this is not for discussion." Possibly reflective of Iseul's ambivalence over her trying to ensure a "straight" life for her daughter?

Consider that this is pre-coming out. As far as Iseul knows, Sara just dislikes this boy, not all boys.

Yes, it's pre-coming out, but Iseul announced her intention to get Sara to start showing an interest in boys, back when she was nine. Also see this strip, where Sara reveals that Iseul has just not. let. up. pushing boys on her, ever since Pete the Paste-Eater.

So by the time of this flashback re "Davey"--seven years after Pete--Iseul may well be starting to worry that her daughter isn't interested in boys at all.

Iseul comes from a VERY straight laced background too, if I remember it right. Swallowing her urges and desires would be hard coded into her. So I can understand her lashing out at Sara. I don't like or condone it, but I can understand it. "If you want to be happy and successful you *must* toe the line, no excuses. Otherwise you're shunned and will never come to anything."

The more I read this, the more it looks like Elizabeth was the instigator, which sort of helps. Though I would hope it puts the nail in the coffin of him being aware of her orientation.. since otherwise.. he's all but pimping her to Elizabeth.

Edit: wrong names...

:( And to think, when I wasn't showing any interest in dating the girls at school, my mother sat me down for the "and boys can like other boys" discussion.
There was a girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead, and when she was good, she was very, very good, and when she was bad she was homicidal.
I am a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and this is my wife.

I agree with what you are getting at, but I wouldn't call it hesitant. It seems more like frustration, paranoia, and possibly fear especially when put together with the revelation of past when Sara came out and the the speculation strip you posted...

As am I. Sara seems to be under a bit of a delusion that a son or daughter having their personal space respected is something one is entitled to. However, the Veldt's idea of personal space is well into Red Flag territory. I honestly hope if Sara finds out about her mother hiding in the closet (Oh PLEASE let her!!) she resorts to pointing and laughing, rather than blowing her stack at her mother's pitiful hypocrisy. That would be sooo cute to see.
