I am kind of jealous of the amount of space the Veldts appear to have.

As am I. Sara seems to be under a bit of a delusion that a son or daughter having their personal space respected is something one is entitled to. However, the Veldt's idea of personal space is well into Red Flag territory. I honestly hope of Sara finds out about her mother hiding in the closet (Oh PLEASE let her!!) she resorts to pointing and laughing rather than blowing her stack at her mother's pitiful hypocrisy. That would be cute to see.

Personal space? She's controlling Sara's LIFE, which is definitely Sara's and only Sara's.

That isn't delusional, that is being fed up when someone is forcing something you don't want down your throat time and time again and just does not want to leave you alone about it. Even if she is still just a kid and that is her mother trying to "do what is best for her" there are limits to how much you can force the issue before you get a reaction like that.

Nice to see Sara's old hair again.

For a moment I thought Charlotte was over at their place, but no way would she ever wear that.

I'm not sure the old Sara would have worn that, either. I thought she was supposed to be into mainstream trends (but on the preppy side) before she came out. Maybe this flashback took place on laundry day.

The more glimpses we see of Theo, the more complex his characterization seems. There are some surface things about him that would easily make me not like him: well-off investment broker, probably into high risks, as he sees the chaotic market as "fun," and probably really into weight-lifting. Those features could easily mark him as a Wall Street type douchebag. But we've also been introduced to him as a supportive and sensitive husband and father. I know he's just been a side character at best, but I like how complex and layered his characterization is. As others have said, I do wonder if he was reading the signs in Sara before she came out, or if he has any suspicions about Iseul.

There seems to be a hint of this in the last panel of the second QUILTBAG strip, where Iseul does her give-boys-a-chance spiel and Theo quietly registers his disapproval.

It made me think of that strip as well. I think Theo seems to be doing his to support both his wife and his daughter.

The previous strip's thread also made me think of it, because Sara refers to her parents "breaking all the rules to fall in love." While perhaps it clearly wasn't quite all the rules, the statement does suggest that, even in her youth, Iseul didn't completely toe the line, otherwise she'd have ended up marrying a Korean boy. It's also why I don't believe that she doesn't feel anything for Theo. It just might not be enough. She's still not handling that right, though.

I don't see him as disapproving of Iseul there especially over the needling of Sara, the way he is in that panel he seems to be more annoyed at her for doing that to Sara yet again.

I concede that, if we had only that comic alone as evidence, we could say that about Theo. But we do have T's statement here:

Theo is more of a don't-rock-the-boat type, and might be inclined to accept this if he were a single parent, but he's at least nominally standing with Iseul on this one.

So, yeah, it's not as though Theo's exactly chafing at the bit and thinking "Aaaa! Iseul, why must you be so homophobic?", but neither does he personally buy into his wife's stance on same-sex relationships as a socially dangerous and therefore unacceptable thing.

Either that or this being a flashback and a different style of art Sara's attire is just an approximation. She's supposed to be 16, but when you think about it she and most of the cast were 16 for well over a year as styles, trends,technologies, and memes came and went in the world of Penny & Aggie. There might've been a time between 2004 and 2009 when that was in style, but it's been awhile and I never paid attention to the latest styles so I just chalk it up to seeing someone in the 80s wear something really garish and assuming it was fashionable even though an 80s expert would tell you everything that was wrong about their outfit and no one would be caught alive in that.

I'm surprised that no one's pointed out: this strip also foreshadowed the latest development with Iseul five years ago. Just scratch the "when she was younger" part.
