That's one of the strips that lead me to tenaciously support Helen and speaking of I'm excited because now that I live outside a major city, Phoenix, I can go to comic conventions which means I can meet Randy Milholland. I'd like to ask him what he has in store for her, but I don't want to tempt fate. That's what got Pepito killed.

He'll be getting around to more of her stuff. He's only delayed it because too many people were being highly negative about his handling of her (despite that he's doing what he and T sent her there for in the first place. Go figure. :? )

Oh don't mistake me with the critics. I like what he is doing although I was worried at first. Although the characters of Something Positive have mellowed over the years they can still be very ferocious. I was worried she might be headed into an alligator trap complete with redneck trees. So far I'm happy with the direction he's gone and see real progress.

I'm more worried I'll embarrass myself by coming off as some overly excited fanboy. It's easier to keep my composure when writing than it is speaking.

I figured you weren't one of those yahoos. ;) I just meant that when I spoke with him at a con in Austin just this last December, that's some of what he told me when I mentioned Helen. Basically it was "I'd have already done more of her storyline, I just got really tired of people being so negative about what I was doing with her, when T and I have already discussed where she's going. She'll be back quite soon." And she was, within like a few weeks of us talking about it. Randy's a lot nicer in person than he makes himself out to be, really. I think he just puts on the "RAWR! I EAT BABIES!" personality to filter out the types of people he got more than enough of when he was growing up (and seeing as he grew up in Texas, I can very much empathize...) I'm enjoying where he's taking her, too. She's this close to realizing her actions will always have consequences (something I've always kind of wondered if she's just managed to somehow not notice... o.O)

He doesn't mind that sort of reaction (too much), just don't try to lovingly caress his beard and you should be fine. ;)

Were they complaining about how she was being used or that she was being used at all.

I'm about 85% sure most of the complains were that Randy had her. He got a lot of the same complaints during the crossovers with Queen of Wands, despite that he and Aerie were co-writing those together.

I''ll admit, when she showed up I was all 'Who is this character and why should I care?' and her behaviour hasn't really helped win her over. Then I read her originating comic and suddenly had context (which both helped and hurt her case).

Honestly, I think her changes have been a bit fast but that might just be because she's out of focus for so long between appearances. I don't know why anyone would eb upset about RM writting her, didn't he introduce her in the first place?

If you mean Helen, uh, no. She's a character that started in Penny & Aggie, and thus, is firmly T's. The complaints were because RMK occasionally does things to spite the readership, mostly because they turn into whiny little jerks that act like because they read his comic, it's "theirs" and "he's doing it wrong!" In fact, go read the Kawaii of the Damned storyline (runs until the 1st of December of that year) for how people tend to act negatively in his experiences. (Maybe just a tad less bloody, but probably not that much.)

And now to get this back on the topic of the comic! For some reason, I almost have this bizarre feeling that Theo knows (but acts like he doesn't), and he sometimes subtly "nudges" Iseul towards women he thinks she might enjoy "spending time with." Of course, I'm probably wrong.

But didn't Helen first appear in guest drawn mini-story done by him? Her, Charlotte and Tarqa? And I'm well aware of his spiteful nature, on occasion I've considered trying to use thast in a reverse psychology way. XD

Nope! She's been in the strip since day one. Go hit up the P&A archives and see.

(And I realized I'd accidentally almost given him fuel for that spiteful nature when I was talking to him, for that matter. "I'm LDS and I've been reading it since '02, and you still haven't driven me away. *beat as I realize how that can be taken* Not that I mean you should try!" XD)

But was that helen from the start or did it inspire who she became?

Either way, my only problem with the way RM writes other peoples characters is that they suddenly become more rational and prone to coherant monologues. Like when he did that guest strip for Shortpacked. It wasn't bad in any way but it was a bit jarring to see Ethan suddenly rational and coherant and argue with logic. Similar things are happening with Helen, the direction isn't bad and I like that she's growing but she seems to have just suddenly become more rational and willing to listen and talk about her problems and actual trust and open up to Nancy.

OTOH, I'm not sure she appeared with a role and name before "Omega Sisters".

You are right about first starring role in the strip, seen here and gets her name here.
However the Omegas were featured on their own without her here, she may be in the background of that strip but she hasn't joined them yet...

Watch them be bearding each other and Sara is adopted-but-was-never-told...

Wouldn't explain the snackages for breakfast... but the idea makes me giggle with evil glee.

I consider the monologuing synonymous with his style of drawing or the fact that his world is a little more outlandish than the one T Campbell created what with a jelly cat, subterranean alligators, and a core cast that should've been arrested for assault years ago. That's why I had mixed feelings about Helen crossing over. On the one hand I thought she was headed into a gator trap, but as they say what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger and under the right and I use that word loosely Helen could emerge stronger and better. People have the capacity to change in Something Positive and I've actually found those storylines the most remarkable. I never thought I'd actually care about Kharisma until her current predicament and Mike has certainly come along way.

Positivity tends to rub me the wrong way unless it's tempered with a good measure of cynicism and skepticism which is what I like about Something Positive.

Don't put the words "going to hell" and "song" near each other. It makes me post this. Or do, it depends on what kind of music you like.
