Is Leah pronounced 'Lee-uh' or 'Lay-uh'?

I think a couple people are pronouncing it the other way, is why I asked.

You mean, like my "Leah it on me" poll? Ah, well, that was me making a bad pun, by going with the Hebrew pronounciation of Leah (לֵאָה, Lé·ah) I tend to hear in my head whenever I see the name, due to my religious education. (In Genesis, Leah was Rachel's elder sister and, along with her, Jacob's wife.)

..I've been pronouncing it wrong all these years. But yeah, I think it's one of those names that could be pronounced either way.

COME ON, T, YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SETTLE THIS.

Also a good mnemonic: "Sara passed up getting Leah'd."

Universally speaking, there is no single "right" way to pronounce Leah, at least as an English name. "Lee-ah" and "Lé-ah" are both standard.

Individually speaking, the only right way to pronounce it is "whichever pronounciation a given person by that name prefers."

I'd been pronouncing it "lay" in my head, the same way it's pronounced in the series finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation, at least as best I remember the latter.

Like Rachel of Guilded Age, she has a name inspired by Genesis.

Not sure if these are real questions or not. Just in case:

I named her after the somewhat undesirable mother of some of the twelve tribes of Israel. Like that Leah to Jacob, she was something Sara could well have gotten "stuck" with while en route to what she really desired. FWIW, the story of Leah, Rachel and Jacob is interesting and massively screwed up, with a bait-and-switch plot point that I would never have believed.

I pronounced the name after Geordi's kinda-sorta girlfriend.

I'm glad it's not supposed to be pronounced the way I pronounce Lia (that's Lee-ah) :D .
