Mullet Mania [fic...or a fragment thereof]

So earlier this evening I was down the pub. An eighties hits station was playing and, that being the decade in which I spent my teen years, I felt a wave of nostalgia passing through me. Or maybe it was just the cheap beer. Anyway, I next found myself imagining the main P&A cast playing another sort of party game (at another of Penny's parties, let's say), this one consisting more simply of the question, "If you were an eighties celebrity, which one would you be?" How would they answer? Let's listen...

*****

LISA: Cyndi Lauper.

ALL: Duhhhh, really? -- Never would've guessed. --That's a no brainer (etc.)

LISA (mock-petulant): Can't be shocking all the time, y'know.

KATY-ANN: Darn it, I wanted to say Cyndi Lauper. Uhhhhmmm... Boy George?

PENNY: But he's a guy! Kinda. No, he is.

KATY-ANN (shrugging): I like his outfits.

JACK: Don Johnson.

KATY-ANN: Ooh, hawt. Wait, that doesn't mean you're gonna start growing permastubble, does it, baby? Not sure I'd like the scratchy.

(JACK smiles slyly to himself.)

BRANDI: Grace Jones.

PENNY: Augh! You with a crewcut...Can't unsee it...

BRANDI: It ain't the crewcut as much as the "confident in her sexuality" thing, y'know?

ALL: (murmurs of assent)

MICHELLE: Ummmmm...Tiffany.

SARA: Joan Jett.

ALL: (see after LISA's answer)

DAPHNE: Then I'm the other Runaways babe... whatsername...

AGGIE: There was more than just the two of them... you mean the singer, Cherie Currie?

DAPHNE: Yeah, her. She had, like, a dysfunctional family. And she was very close with Jett, especially in the movie.

SARA: 'Course, she left the group before Jett did.

DAPHNE: What's that, hon?

SARA: Nothin'.

DUANE: David Byrne.

ALL: David Byrne?

DUANE: *Shrug* What can I say. Lack of intellectual / geeky-but-still cool eighties idols isn't my fault.

PENNY: Madonna. Late eighties Madonna, not her skanky boy-toy phase.

LISA (leaping up): And then Aggie should be Sandra Bernhardt, so you two can...

ALL: SHUT UP, LISA!

AGGIE: Yes well, if I may be permitted to speak for myself... hmm... one of those singer-songwriters, I guess... Edie Brickell?

PENNY: Who?

AGGIE: Y'know, formerly of the New Bohemians. (Sings) I'm not aware of too many things / I know what I know, if you know what I mean... That hippie enough for you, Pen? ...Penny?

PENNY: ...You have a real pretty voice, y'know. I could listen to it all day.

AGGIE (blushing): Wow... thanks... Um, why's everyone but you and me nudging each other, smirking and leaving the room?

******

Yeah, so that's what I got. Stan (not present) would be Max Headroom, I suppose...heh.

I figured Aggie would want to be Bob Geldof or Bono; wanting to save the world. :)

Apologies for the cold water, but I figure they're too young to all have a detailed understanding of 80s celebrities… I mean, it's been over 20 years since the 80s ended…

(OTOH my own 80s education is inadequate to tell if all of those even are particularly apt picks…)

Heh heh, fair enough, Tropylium. I admit I'm showing my age there. I suppose I was thinking that, with eighties nostalgia still fairly big (all-eighties radio stations and such), vintage eighties videos increasingly available on iTunes, or for free (officially or otherwise) on YouTube, and revivals of eighties TV franchises, these crazy kids would have at least a working knowledge of that era's pop culture. But my definition of "working knowledge" may differ from yours.

Some of them probably might, true.

Doesn't matter, a fun minific anyway… :)
